The themes of his paintings derive from observing the natural world, interpreting elements of colour and light. He combines watercolour and gouache, controlling transparency and opacity through the physical and haptic activities of applying paint. Reid uses a variety of tools and methods to build and create a surface of paint. After the initial marks are made the works take on a life of their own becoming both figurative and abstract, a poetic dance of figure and nature.
Born in Nottinghamshire, Stuart Reid studied at Grimsby School of Art, Falmouth School of Art (now part of Falmouth University) and Birmingham School of Art and Design (now BIAD, University of Central England). Stuart Reid lives and works in East London. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Artists paintings are held in private, corporate, and public collections.
