Her luminous and vibrant colours in the painting convey a sense of vitality and energy, creating the feeling that one is not alone when in nature. Cleuren describes how the forest welcomes people into the natural environment. Her abstract paintings are exactly alike, they hold the viewers gaze and comfort their senses.
Passers-By is an expressive acrylic painting on paper. The branches of the trees convey a strong verticality; however, the artist suggests that the painting is in fact ‘horizontal’. This is because the circular puddle shapes are in fact water lilies and leaves moving along the stream. These floating colours are reflective of how life passes by, evoking the horizontality of life and death. Cleuren paints the light and reflections when hitting the water, the way one would see it in a fleeting moment. Turquoises, greens, blues, yellows, pinks, purples, come together in fragmented patches.
Gabriella Cleuren was born in Belgium and has been painting contemporary ‘poetic visions’ for over 50 years. She has received international recognition for her work from countries such as Germany, France, the Netherlands, and England. In her abstracted and fragmented colourful paintings, she utilises contrasts such as light and dark; and the horizontal and the vertical.
