Sabzi’s artistic practice is inspired by both the East and the West. He utilises and defines Western Pop Art icons, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, which he saturates with intertextual and intercultural references. Interlaced with elaborate patterns the portraits of these mega-stars maintain their original integrity and character, while various symbols merge and conflate, hovering somewhere between memory and dream. Unlike Warhol who adopted methods of mass productions, infinitely reproducible, Sabzi’s creates one-off unique portraits. To him, these representations have a deep sense of exile and above all convey the idea of alienation and of loss.
