The title plays on the Pop Art genre, an art movement that emerged in the 50s and flourished during the 60s in America and Britain. Subject matters were inspired by films, comics, commercials, and other forms of popular culture, blurring the boundaries between high art and common objects that embody the most broadly shared meanings of a social system.
Romano’s artistic process involves reproducing an image of the cardiac organ, in bold hues. Each piece of artwork is unique in its colour scheme, varying from neon yellow to fluorescent pink. He incorporates the frame into the artwork, highlighting that for him the frame is just as important as the image. The neon Perspex frame and acrylic glass create a luminosity to each piece. And when presented as a group, they appear like portraits, each one with detailed depictions of veins, giving depth to a two-dimensional surface. The vibrancy of colours brings each heart to life, their energy mirroring the rhythm of a beating heart, pumping colour through the veins.
