The Power of Art #110, Velvet Zoe Ramos ‘Cultivate’

the sustainability and cycle of domestic agriculture; the lack and growth of food; and the binding of mothers’ stomachs when they experience extreme hunger.

Ramos attempts to draw attention to the connection between a basic human right of having access to nourishment, human endurance, and human survival. Her idea to grow seeds intertwined in a rope is unusual and challenging, as it entails a risk of uncertainty, since she cannot control and guarantee the growing of nutritious shoots.  A sprout-intermeshed robe is hanging from a branch of a lifeless tree reaching a nearby table, where a spoon and plate are placed.

Many of us do not experience or suffer from malnutrition and starvation, in contrast to the drought-affected countries in Africa, where mothers from poverty-stricken communities bind their stomachs to numb the pain of their hunger. Aid agencies have already reported and warned about this ongoing humanitarian crisis, which has intensified due to climate change and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
