Ernesto Romano’s series, Royal Blood, is a collection of his iconic X-ray Queens. Each image depicts an X-ray of a human skull in profile adorned with the King George IV Diadem crown and a string of pearls. The representation is instantly recognisable as symbolic of the classic royal profile. To produce the image, a X-ray from his own skull has been taken and embellishes it with glitter, spray paint, gold leaf, Swarovski crystals, and silk. Each artwork is printed on Perspex and aluminium. Romano believes that “art should be for everyone and the bloodless image of an X-rayed human skull is intended to convey diversity, inclusivity, and equality” and is a reminder that beneath all the glitter and gold, the royal family are also human.
Romano created his first X-rayed Queen in 2016 for an exhibition 'Queen Themed' in London at the Tabernacle Gallery, each artist was invited to create a portrait of the Monarch to commemorate her 90th birthday. Romano is marking the Queens seventy years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth, with the unique series Royal Blood Platinum.
