This curated collection showcases Kupelian’s vibrant exploration of life’s serene yet dynamic moments, brought to life through his distinctive figurative and naïve style.
Paul Kupelian's painting demonstrate both his use of vibrant colours and his original draftmanship. The paintings presented in this newsletter include View from My Balcony with a Twist, 2024 and Waiting, 2023, these pieces balance playful simplicity with meticulous attention to detail. They reflect the artist’s joyful celebration of life, infusing even the most still moments with energy and resonance.
Each canvas reveals Kupelian’s unique ability to transform ordinary scenes such as interiors, balconies, and gardens into portals of introspection and serenity. His creative process, rooted in his rich cultural heritage and lifelong artistic journey, channels a profound connection to colour, memory, and emotion. The exhibition’s title, Full of (Still) Life, encapsulates this duality: a serene yet dynamic meditation on the beauty of life’s quieter moments.
Kupelian’s oeuvre can be associated with Fauvism and earlier movements like post-impressionism and neo-impressionism. The influences of these movements inspired Kupelian. He embraces order and structure to create his vibrant pictorial spaces and applies complementary colours, where pairs of colours appear opposite each other on a colour wheel, when placed side-by-side, they make each shade look brighter, producing a strong visual effect. Born in 1975, Paul Kupelian is a self-taught painter of Lebanese and French heritage, with roots tracing back to Armenian descent. Raised in an artistic family, Kupelian's journey into the world of art began at the age of 7 when his great aunt introduced him to the intricate techniques of oil painting. His childhood was spent immersed in creativity, dedicating countless hours to sketching and painting his surroundings. He explored various mediums, including oil, ink, acrylic, oil sticks, charcoal, and sanguine. As he matured, art became Paul Kupelian's therapeutic outlet, a means to express his emotions and navigate the complexities of life. His artistic evolution is a visual chronicle of significant events and personal growth, providing him with inner peace and stability.
In 2016, Kupelian showcased his inaugural exhibition, "Looking at the Bright Side," at Galerie Janine Rubeiz, which garnered acclaim from art critics and collectors alike.
