Susan Keshet's Sync series focuses on the allure of fashion and trends in contemporary life. Drawn to the aspirational world of communication and its impact on human behaviour, she questions how we might be affected by trends we witness and the influence of digital media and technology. Working with found photographic material, Keshet creates figurative compositions in which her subjects often become caricatured and stylised in form. Depicted figures in motion are placed on particular colour fields and appear starkly against their surroundings. Other scenes are inhabited by a single model or by a pair of models, echoing their engagement with their activities and their disengagement with spectators. The dualism between interior and exterior is at the heart of Keshet’s artistic practice, investigating how the world is simultaneously perceived and imagined in urban settings and the self. A sense of silence and estrangement often pervade her paintings and frequently imply the transitory nature of modern existence.
